DHEA (Dehydroepiandrosterone) is an abundant, naturally-occurring hormone secreted by the adrenal glands. One of more than 150 hormones produced by the adrenal glands, DHEA is the most abundantly produced. After being secreted, DHEA enters the bloodstream and travels throughout the body where it enters cells and is converted into male hormones, known as androgens, and female hormones, known as estrogens. Small amounts of DHEA are also made in the brain by neurons or brain cells. Circulating levels of DHEA peak at about age 25 and then steadily decline with age, depleting the body of DHEA's unique biological effects.
